The Americas Regional Committee (ARC) of the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) announces up to three training fellowship awards in laboratory animal science, sponsored by the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). This award is available to an individual from ICLAS member countries in Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. These countries include Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad y Tobago, El Salvador, Honduras, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Each award will sponsor an individual to travel to Boston, Massachusetts, USA and participate in laboratory animal science training and experience at the facilities and programs of MGH and affiliated and collaborating research institutions in the Boston area for a period of three months. Training and experience will include “lean” management tools and techniques in laboratory animal care, clinical rounds with CCM veterinarians, local and regional seminars and conferences, and tours of other laboratory animal care facilities and programs at neighboring biomedical research institutions.

Established in 1811, MGH (http://www.massgeneral.org/) is consistently ranked among the top five hospitals in the US and serves as a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School. MGH has the largest research program of any hospital in the world, with over 100,000 square meters of research space supporting $640 million in annual funding for virtually every field of medicine and surgery. The Boston area is also home to many other world-leading academic research institutions and teaching hospitals, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New England Primate Research Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Also located here are major research and development (R&D) centers for global pharmaceutical and medical device companies such as Novartis, Merck, Amgen, Pfizer, and Boston Scientific.

The Center for Comparative Medicine is the central laboratory animal care service for MGH scientists. It has a staff of 120 employees, including seven veterinarians and an annual budget of $16 million for six laboratory animal facilities totaling 7,000 square meters. Animal species under the care of CCM include mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, and non-human primates. CCM is a leader in applying advanced management strategies to continuously improve quality, reduce energy consumption and other waste, and provide rewarding careers for workers in laboratory animal care and medicine; examples are available at http://www.virtualviarum.com/.

The candidate should be a biomedical scientist, facility manager, veterinarian or veterinary technician involved with experimental animals who is a member of their local or regional laboratory animal science organization. The individual should be a person with a career goal of managing an animal research or production facility or program in his/her country. Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Preference is given to individuals who otherwise would not have funding for international travel to and experience in activities of this kind.

Each award consists of funds to cover costs of transportation, lodging, food, and incidental expenses associated with these activities. Assistance will be provided in making travel and lodging arrangements in the Boston area. No salary during the time at MGH is included in this award. There will be no tuition or other participation fees for this training and experience.

Nominations or applications should be written in English and consist of:
· A cover letter, which should include the candidate’s career goals and a statement with detailed information on the reasons why the candidate is interested in attending this training. This statement should indicate what he/she is hoping to gain, how he/she would use the knowledge and experience to be acquired, how that knowledge would be disseminated, where and to whom, and what benefits will be derived.
· A curriculum vitae, maximum of 10 pages in length, with emphasis on laboratory animal science training and experience.
· Proof of proficiency in the English language.
· A letter of recommendation from the employer, including commitment for salary support to the recipient during the training period or other assurance of similar financial support.
· At least one letter of recommendation from another individual familiar with the qualifications and professional interests and activities of the candidate.
· A letter from the applicant’s local or regional association assuring their current membership.

The decision of the committee will be communicated by May 1, 2010 and the period of each training will be for three months. The time of training will be between the months of September and May and can be negotiated with the sponsoring institution. If there is a preference of time during this period it should be stated in the application.
